Beliefs and Etiquette

Rokugani etiquette is too complex to completely explain here, but here are a few pointers:

  • The 3 sins - The universe was created by 3 sins fear, desire and regret. Consequently, samurai avoid expression of almost any emotion and those in particular.
  • Perception is more important than truth - Be sincere not honest. Don't level accusations that people dont want to know about you dishonour both parties. Physical evidence is nothing next to the testimony of a noble in good standing.
  • Never touch dead flesh - It is completely taboo. Unavoidable in battle, but afterwards you must wash as soon as possible.
  • Your name must be returned to your ancestors - Do not bring shame to your family name for it does not belong to you. If you bring to much shame then you must cleanse by committing seppeku.
  • Terms of address - Those of a higher station are addressed with the suffix sama. Those lower or equal are addressed with the suffix san.
